Pony Racing Training Days

The College holds training days during the school holidays, open to those with no previous experience of race-riding, through to seasoned junior jockeys, age 8 to 15 years old.

Ponies of all shapes and sizes are welcome to take part. The overall aim of a training day is to improve the junior jockey’s position, technique and confidence whilst riding at speed and to develop their understanding of race-riding and the horseracing industry.

Training Days are run on a level based system:

Training at all three levels includes tuition on balance, style and technique, pace, control and awareness. Training takes place in the classroom, on the racehorse simulators and on the riders own pony.. Riders receive a certificate.

Level 1 & 2

Level 1 is mandatory as it acts as an assessment day for health and safety reasons. On completion of this day each rider and pony combination are assessed and then invited to attend another training day at the level we feel is suitable.

Level 1 & 2 are designed for beginners with no formal qualification being given for attending.

The Level 1 needs to be completed before taking Level 2; a Level 3 will qualify the rider/pony combination for PRA Pony Races and Pony Club Pony Races.

To be exempt from the Level One Assessment you must be 12 years or older and have already competed in a P2P or Racecourse Series race (Pony Club races do not count). You can qualify for the Racecourse Series by passing the Level 3 Training with us on the pony that you wish to race in the series.

Level 3

Attendance on a Level 3 Training Day qualifies you to ride in Point-to-Point and Pony Club Pony Races. You can also qualify for the Racecourse Series by passing the Level 3 training with us on the pony that you wish to race in the series and having ridden the required amount of winners.  To qualify for the Charles Owen Series you will have already competed in a P2P or Racecourse Series race (Pony Club races do not count).

Level 3 is required for Pony Club, point-to-point pony racing and Racecourse series.

For entry requirements, visit the Pony Racing Authority.
