DEATH OF CHRIS MALLINSON

Long-time National Horseracing College trustee Chris Mallinson has died at his home at Blyth, near Bawtry, aged 73, after a brave battle against cancer.

Chris, who founded Doncaster Cables, the largest British-owned general wiring manufacturer in the UK, in 1984, was first appointed to the board in 2004. He had a short break from 2007-2011 but returned and remained a trustee at his death.

He and his wife Andrea were keen supporters of the-then Northern Racing College even before he joined the board, and when Daawe, the best racehorse they owned, retired at the end of the 2000 season, he came to Rossington Hall as a stallion to give students experience of the breeding side of racing.

Daawe retired after a career total of 101 races, of which he won 17, and his most successful offspring from a small number of mares proved just as hardy. This was Daaweitza, who raced in Andrea Mallinson’s colours for Brian Ellison and won 12 of his 94 races, amassing almost £100,000 in stakes.

Chris and Andrea were also long-standing and enthusiastic supporters of the College’s fundraising events, which they would originally organise themselves, before taking a table at the annual Leger Legends event.

NHC Chief Executive, Colonel Stephen Padgett said “On behalf of past and present learners, staff and Trustees, I wish to express our sadness at the news of Chris’s death.  I would add also that we are very grateful for his loyal support to the College which made such a positive difference over so many years.  He will be sorely missed but his contribution will not be forgotten.”
