Lee Newton

Training Instructor

Lee Newton

Lee started working with racehorses at the age of 10 with local trainer Ron Thompson, when he wasn’t at school he jumped on his bike and travelled 6 miles to help out and learn to ride during weekends and school term holidays. He then moved to Newmarket to begin his jockey apprenticeship at the age of 15 and started race riding when he was 17.

He completed his apprenticeship and rode successfully as a professional flat jockey for 13 years having many winners mainly in the UK and also some abroad in Germany, Austria and Italy. Lee hung up his riding boots in 2002 and retrained as a financial adviser working for Natwest Bank and various other roles including a mortgage advisor.

The opportunity to return to the industry he has always been passionate about came when he was approached to act as a Jockeys Agent which he jumped at and booked rides for seven years representing many jockeys including Micky Fenton, Robert Winston, Graham Gibbons, Adrian Nicholls to name a few before joining the college in 2023 as a Training Instructor.

“ Since retiring as a jockey I have never enjoyed a role as much until joining the college as a Training Instructor. I love being back around the horses and passing on my knowledge and experience to the learners and take great satisfaction in seeing them progress throughout the course”.
